Spring is truly one of nature’s best offerings. Everything that has a semblance of a root comes alive with leaves and flowers. However, if you have a garden, spring is also when you need to clean it regularly and intensively.

So, how to clean up your garden in the spring? Here’s an easy and practical guide for all you gardeners out there.

Tools and Supplies

Before you can start cleaning your garden, you will need to gather the following tools and supplies.

  • Gloves
  • Shovel
  • Pruners, shears, or scissors
  • Rake
  • Loppers
  • Hoe
  • Garden fork
  • Hand trovel
  • Spade
  • Wheelbarrow

Steps to Take for Fall Garden Clean-up

To start cleaning the garden, put on gloves and your work clothes.

Tackle the large debris first

This can include fallen branches, litter, and any debris that is of substantial size. The best way to tackle them is to pick them up and collect them in a wheelbarrow to dispose of later.

Prune the plants and the flowers

Pruning is the next essential step, especially if you have perennial flowers or plants. If the perennials are budding with new growth, you can also remove the mulch left from the winter.

Trimming the grass and evergreen plants

If you have ornamental grass and semi or evergreen plants, trimming is also essential. Trimming the dead and weak foliage will enable the plants to grow better and quicker. Don’t hesitate to trim the grass taking generous portions off the grass since they will grow back quickly in the spring.

Weeding and removal of dead parts

For small weeds, using your hands should suffice. On the other hand, a hand trovel can help remove the larger weeds with deep roots. Mulching the weeds is a good idea so that they won’t mess up your garden again.

Removing dead parts or plants is also crucial to help the plants and flowers grow. A shovel can come very handy if you are dealing with larger plants that are dead.

Rake and clean

By now, your garden can do with a thorough raking and finishing up. Raking will take care of leaves, twigs, and all the leftovers from the pruning and trimming you have performed.

In addition, you can also inspect the plants and flowers for any nasty bugs that may be hiding. But make an exception for helpful bugs as ladybugs and damsel bugs.

Check the soil

Finally, give the soil in your garden a thorough inspection. If you are not sure how to determine the nutrients and pH level, consider getting a soil test.
